The story of my hair – purple, blue and all

I used to have long hair, about hip-length, during my school days and college/university days. My hair has always been thin, slightly brown and long…. never thick – and my family hereditary showed signs of thinning hair and hence the scalp is always seen on the top of my head.

And I have peculiar hair – oily scalp, thin hair; straight on top, curly and frizzy as it grows out.

As I grew older, and had a kid, hair fall increased and hair started becoming more and more thin. End result was that I had to cut my hair short, keep it short throughout.

In Singapore, hair treatments, keratin, rebonding, perming and coloring is common and a way of life. And I fell prey to it as well 🙂 I love the idea of straight, fuss-free, shiny hair – but all of the treatments above need continuous use of products, treatments and caring with love for your hair. And that is what I did!

Check out my Instagram – @scisandhya to know more about the story of my hair for the past few years.

I smoothen/rebond my hair every 6 months – generally keratin treatment so that hair looks naturally straightened. And I have loved coloring my hair as well – burgundy, red, brown and black too. I have always be fascinated by the colors of the peacock and wanted those in my hair 🙂 and so I went for it after much contemplation, as this required to bleach my hair – which is quite harmful.

Below is the story of my purple, blue hair… a few hiccups and repeated coloring – check the story below:

So I ended up in a hair salon in Chinatown, Singapore – they bleached a section of my hair, as I wanted the colors of the peacock only on a particular section. See my blonde hair after bleaching and then see the colors!!! – purple, blue

I spent SG$88 for this.

Then I went on to take awesome pics of my awesome hair:

So, I went on to wash my hair after 2 days with color protective shampoo…. but look at what happened 😦

The color were fading away – with just one wash

So, I contacted the salon and they told me I should have use purple colored shampoo and hair mask – duh!! they never told me the first time I was there!

So, they asked me come again to recolor and buy the shampoo and mask from them. So I went and had it quickly colored again!

This was after the second round of coloring.

But even after I used the color shampoo and mask [note: the color from the shampoo stains your bathrooms/shower (white tiles, bathtub needs scrubbing after you shower!)], the color did fade but only after a few washes. Then I went on Google to do my research, which I should have probably done before I did the coloring – it seems it is common for the color to fade in a couple of washes and the bleached blonde/grey hair starts being visible.

So, this is how it looks last week – 2 weeks after the second round of coloring:

It looks a bit sad, right? So I went online and bought hair color for SG$7 and I colored again at home:

And now, this is how it looks and I hope it stays for a few weeks at least 🙂

But overall, I love the colors even if they are slightly faded.

Note: If you color your hair crazy colors,

  • Make sure to buy color shampoo and mask
  • It does damage your hair, use the mask religiously
  • Use cold water to wash your hair
  • The color stains your bathroom, towels and pillows
  • Do not expect the color to last too long – just a few weeks is what it guarantees
  • I would rather do the coloring myself at home 🙂

I hope this post helps, let me know your thoughts below!

  1. Nice cause and effect analysis. Honest!
I was thinking of coloring my hair burgundy or red. Now am worried about doing this to my already damaged, overly processed, mistreated hair, 😦 after knowing that the color does not last long.
Have you ever tried ways to naturally color it or using coloured extensions?

    1. Hi Raje, Burgundy should be ok if you do it on your original hair and not bleach… also use color protective shampoo. Dont expose hair too much in the sunlight. It will last for 6 to 8 weeks and then start fading to brown, if your hair is black. I have tried beetroot juice once and that works well or best is henna

  2. Your posts are interesting. I still remember the special oil that you used during your highschool days to have thick hair 🙂 The interesting thing about this post is how you have explained on the color fading and steps taken !! not many share the secrets of denial 🙂

  3. I am secret admirer of your blog .

I do have fizzy , dull hair and I am thinking to do rebonding soon. I do used to colour my hair myself and agree it can last for few weeks ( though they advertise as permanent Colour ) 😉I could sense it has lots of pros and cons when we do rebonding.
Can I get some suggestions from you about rebonding
